Urine color in your pet – What is normal and what should you react to?

Keeping track of your pet's urine is a simple but effective way to detect early signs of something wrong with their body. The color, smell, and amount can reveal dehydration, infections, or illness long before other symptoms become apparent. An attentive pet owner can make a big difference!

What is normal urine color?

Generally, light yellow to golden yellow urine is a sign that your pet is well hydrated and that their kidneys are functioning properly. The lighter the color, the more fluid their body has – think of diluted juice. If the urine is almost colorless, it may indicate that your pet is drinking a lot, which in some cases can be a sign of underlying conditions such as diabetes.

⚠️ When the color of your urine changes – what could it mean?

Urine color Possible cause What should you do?
💛 Dark yellow Dehydration Encourage more fluids! Try wet food , or why not a cat fountain ?
🟠 Orange Highly concentrated urine or liver damage If it repeats or if the animal shows other symptoms – contact a veterinarian.
🔴 Red / Pink Blood in the urine (can be anything from light pink to bright red) Urgent! Seek veterinary attention immediately. Could be urinary tract infection, kidney stones, tumors or other serious bleeding.
🟤 Brown / Tea-colored Liver disease, muscle damage, or poisoning Vet asap. This is a serious sign.
Cloudy / Whitish Infection (e.g. urinary tract infection) or crystals If you suspect urinary tract problems, special urinary tract food can be a good complement, but a veterinary examination is important to make a diagnosis.

How do you prevent urinary problems?

  • Always have access to fresh water: Make sure the water bowl is clean and filled with fresh water 24/7.
  • Combine dry food with wet food: Wet food contains significantly more liquid and contributes to a better fluid balance. Explore our range of wet food for cats and dogs.
  • Use a water fountain (for cats): Many cats prefer running water and will drink more from a water fountain .
  • Multiple water bowls: Place water bowls in multiple places around the home, especially in areas where your pet spends a lot of time. See our range of cat food bowls .
  • Clean environment: For cats, a clean litter box is crucial. A dirty box can cause the cat to stay in it for too long, increasing the risk of urinary tract infections.

When should you contact a veterinarian?

If you notice any unusual changes such as blood, cloudiness, strong discoloration, a change in odor, or that your pet seems to be in pain, urinating more/less frequently, or has difficulty urinating , do not hesitate to contact your veterinarian immediately. These symptoms may be early signs of a urinary tract infection, kidney problems, diabetes, or other serious conditions that require prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Remember: The lighter the urine – the better. The darker or more abnormal – the faster you should react. Your attention can be crucial for your pet’s health!
